In addition to the many efforts to produce enough of various kinds of foods, and all the other concerns that you have read about throughout this book, it is necessary to make sure that the food is safe to eat. Unsafe food is a huge global problem that is considered to be one of the major obstacles to improved living conditions and economic development in many parts of the world. The term food safety differs from the previously often mentioned term food security in that food safety refers to hygiene aspects, whereas food security is broader and includes access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods.
