ABSTRACT

It is in remote and rural locations where solar electricity is already cost-effective and changing lives, as Hermann Scheer, discussed in Chapter 6, acknowledges. Where there is no connection to a national network, the magic of electricity is being made available using solar energy, as an alternative, or in addition to, diesel generators. The sun is being put to use to transform lives by facilitating fresh water through pumps, enabling valuable drugs to be kept in refrigerators, or supplying evening light so children can study after dark. PV modules in stand-alone applications are performing these – and more – functions. A partial list would have to include:
