ABSTRACT

Universities in the UK over the past decade have been investing heavily in the implementation of ‘internationalisation’ strategies. To date, the globalisation of higher education in the UK has predominantly involved the marketing of UK education to overseas consumers while attracting thousands of international students. e government’s policy on internationalising higher education was launched through the Prime Minister’s Initiative on International Education (PMI) (1999-2004) and PMI2 (2006-2011). PMI2 was a ve-year strategy that built on PMI1 with the aim of ensuring the UK becomes a leader in international education by attracting an additional 70,000 international students to the UK and signicantly growing the number of partnerships between the UK and other countries (British Council 2012). However, currently, no UK policy exists that takes a position on the desirability of UK students studying abroad.
