ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 returns to the big picture and addresses five inter-related issues, the resolution of which will give shape to the contours of the terrain that lies ahead for schools on the journey to self-transformation. These are (1) what assumptions underlie efforts to bring about change in schools and school systems; (2) what assumptions have been made about the role of innovation; (3) what is measured – what counts as performance; (4) how it is measured – the economics of transformation; and (5) how fast – the speed and scale of transformation. The way in which (1) and (2) are addressed has a powerful influence on (3), (4) and (5).
