ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues that making a digital story requires and mirrors good instructional design. It focuses on contexts in which adults learn and how storytelling is and can be used to support learning. Adult learning focuses primarily on job-related development of skills, examples from different sectors and work environments illustrate the pervasive and persistent use of storytelling. The book addresses persistent components of digital storytelling. It provides a broad foundation of the concepts and traditions of storytelling that have endured over time and are manifested in 21st-century forms of storytelling. The book discusses instructional frameworks of storytelling how and why storytelling can be used as an instructional method, particularly in relation to contemporary instances of storytelling through various media and the emerging models of digital storytelling. It illustrates applications of storytelling in various contexts.
