ABSTRACT

Travel is an inherent part of professional sport. In the 2013–14 season, the average team in North America’s NHL travelled 41,390 miles (66,611km). This is the equivalent of travelling around the world more than 11 times. Tennis players are arguably the most travelled athletes, with players reported to have travelled 48,237 miles (77,600km) in a two-month period. Travel may take the form of long-haul international flights, shorter domestic flights or even hours spent on buses, trains or in cars.
