ABSTRACT

In July 2011 the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) published a new framework for local TV in the UK. Jeremy Hunt, then Secretary of State, said his key priority was to establish sustainable local TV across the country on digital terrestrial television. Visible on Freeview channel 8 in England and Northern Ireland, or on channel 26 on Freeview in Wales and Scotland, the local TV stations would have prominence on the electronic programme guide and enable local journalism to develop. The BBC committed millions of pounds towards engineering and transmitter costs and purchasing of local news items, and the government committed to superfast broadband to support local TV as it rolls out on the Internet.
