ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 reviewed fundamental concepts of stratigraphy, facies and environments. The object of Chapter 2 is to describe the various techniques available to interpret the depositional environment of sedimentary rocks. It wi l l quickly be realized that many diagnostic techniques are available, some are only suitable for studies where sediments crop out at the surface, others are only suitable for subsurface studies, while a few techniques are applicable to both. In the 25 years since the first edition of this book appeared methods of surface studies have changed little, but subsurface methods have undergone major changes due to a revolution in geophysics, both in seismic surveying and in wireline logging. The technicalities of the various methods wil l not be described here, but it is assumed that readers wil l be attending, or have attended, courses in sedimentology, seismic geophysics and wireline logging. If not, do not panic, the following text is presented in such a way as to make it accessible to all readers, even engineers.
