ABSTRACT

Biogenic sedimentary structures originate through the behaviour of animals and clearly do not represent the burrowing animals themselves. Seilacher (1967b) described trace fossils epigrammatically as ‘fossil behaviour’. The special features of the taphonomic filter through which the structure must pass in order to be preserved in the fossil record further emphasize the differences between trace fossil and body fossil.
