ABSTRACT

In the early days of ichnology, some very hopeful predictions were made of the new tool for sedimentology. Trace fossils seemed to provide an immediate key to palaeoenvironmental interpretation. Seilacher's (1967) ichnofacies were a fail-safe guide to palaeobathymetry and Ophiomorpha nodosa was a sure indicator of the littoral and shallow neritic environments (Weimer and Hoyt 1964).
