ABSTRACT

How can you play a game across a whole city? While many games are played with handsets and consoles other sorts of gaming takes place with players moving about real space like a city or a landscape. Blast Theory designs games of this sort and in this conversation they explain how, as artists in collaboration with leading technologists and media companies, they can create large scale hybrid events. They also demonstrate how collaboration across sectors can lead to experimental examples of pervasive gaming and incorporate ideas like ‘outside broadcasting’. And they raise an important aspect of interactivity — how to enable people to contribute their own content to the narrative in which they are participating.
