ABSTRACT

The Universal Film Aktien Gesellschaft, better known as UFA, and founded in 1917, was the largest film corporation Germany has ever had. During its heyday in the 1920s and already well before it became a state monopoly under Nazi rule in the course of the late 1930s, it dominated the national film business. Engine and power-house, obliging domestic competitors to do battle on its terms, UFA also held a commanding position in international and transnational trade. Throughout Continental Europe, but also in South America and the Middle East, it had no rival except for the Hollywood Majors.
