ABSTRACT

They wanted to force me by administrative measures to abandon documentary film. The actual production of the film in Central Asia took place in abnormal conditions, during a typhus outbreak, with no means of transportation and with irregular supplies of money. Sometimes we ate nothing for three days. Sometimes we mended the local population's clocks to earn enough for a breadless meal. We walked about covered from head to toe in naphthalene, smeared with acrid and stinking liquids, our skin itching and unable to breathe, to combat the lice that were attacking us. Our nerves, maintained by sheer willpower, held up the whole time. We did not want to give in. We resolved to fight to the finish.
