ABSTRACT

Let us try and put a real chair (preferably an American office chair) in front of the camera and, next to it, one that has been superbly painted (and painted in the most naturalistic way) on canvas by an artist. Then let us film them and see what comes out on the screen: we shall see that the real chair looks like a real chair and the painted one looks artificial. Whereas with the naked eye we perceive the artist's work as a symbol of a chair, on the screen we perceive the painted canvas.
