ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the role of a particular tourism agency in stimulating development in a specific region, and is thus intended to act as a case study illustrating some of the more general themes discussed earlier. It examines the objectives and methods of the official tourist organisation in the region and attempts an assessment of its effectiveness in terms of both the development of the region as a whole and the evolution of individual resort complexes. The ultimate aim is not to arrive at specific criticisms or suggestions relevant to the case under consideration but to use the specific regional experience to develop a comparative methodology for the study of tourism development in such regions.
