ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall attempt to answer one problem by posing myself a second. The first problem I shall ask myself is what an organization ‘is’, the second, quite differently, is how it is possible for the concepts of role and person to be combined in the same universe of discourse. I shall address myself to this second problem (at some length) and then return to the first. The reason for my adopting this somewhat unusual procedure should become clear as the argument progresses.
