ABSTRACT
In the past four decades nothing like popular cinema in its typical western form existed in Poland. No genre in this country with its own tradition, classical examples and model texts can be singled out and labelled as popular in the way Charles Altman, for example, distinguishes this phenomenon in the context of US culture.
