Other sick men

In the late nineteenth century, the Chinese Empire, and to some extent the Spanish Empire, showed considerable similarities of pattern with those already remarked in the Ottoman Empire. Those Empires, too, had once ruled effectively over a huge area, but a large part of that area had either become independent, or had been annexed by others, in comparatively recent times.
