ABSTRACT
The incest taboo is synonymous with culture, and when this taboo breaks down it means we no longer have culture or religion to direct our energies towards spiritual goals. The breakdown of the taboo indicates that the symbolic thinking needed for spiritual transformation is absent or, if present, is no longer functioning in an effective way, or no longer understood by the people.
