ABSTRACT
More than any of his contemporary political leaders, in the 1980s and 1990s President Francois Mitterrand was in the forefront of European statesmen willing the EC member-states on to closer political and economic integration. In the present chapter, we shall attempt to retrace Mitterrand's evolving attitude towards Europe, aiming in addition to sketch the main lines of the changing European debate in France. In Chapter 10, we shall deal with Mitterrand's response to the post-1989 European order.
