Georgian England experienced a boom in 'popularized medicine', taking that phrase to mean advice works purveying regular medical information in simplified language to a broad public. 1 Various cultural currents promoted this development, including populist radicalism and Enlightenment faith in the diffusion of knowledge; the drive to reform popular culture; and the birth of a consumer society.
