ABSTRACT
Mark was a well-known painter; highly successful, reclusive, but socially adroit and charming when the occasion demanded. He came to analysis in his mid-life because he had never been in love, and he agreed with his friends who said that he was aloof and unknowable. Although he loved painting, even that was starting to feel more like a commercial production than a creative act.
