ABSTRACT

This Unit aims to help teachers develop usable procedures for improving their ability to ensure progression. It focuses on three main aspects of progression – namely, Diagnosing, Planning and Matching. The Unit is aimed at all teachers; it focuses on procedures, rather than specific stages, so that work on the Unit can be shared between teachers of children of any age range. It also encourages tentative solutions to what is a difficult problem, on the grounds that final solutions are unlikely to be found. The nature of children’s progression requires that it has to be attended to over an extended period of time; hence there needs to be a fairly lengthy period between starting the Unit and undertaking the Review Sessions. The Unit could usefully be undertaken simultaneously with other Units, such as Unit 5, ‘Assessment’, or Unit 7, ‘Getting to Know Children’s Ideas in Science’.
