ABSTRACT
The ensemble of phonic and conceptual differences which constitute the language system [la langue] result then from two kinds of comparison: relations are both associative and syntagmatic; the groupings of one or the other order [of difference] are, in large measure, established by the language system; it is this ensemble of usual relationships which constitutes and which presides over its functioning.
