ABSTRACT
Far-reaching reforms at all levels of the education system are at present taking place in the five new Länder. They affect structures as well as educational objectives and curricula. The same applies to universities and colleges which should once again become centres of free research and teaching rather than ‘forges of socialist cadres’. One could speak of the greatest ‘school and university experiment’ in modern German educational history. This by no means merely involves adopting well-tried West German regulations. Autonomous models have been, and still are being, developed in the new Länder. In some cases they go beyond the 1964 Hamburg Agreement on unifying general schooling and beyond the University Outline Law.
