ABSTRACT

This chapter describes children’s play themes that can inspire individual art classes. The play themes described should be an essential part of home and school art for all grades. They are “guaranteed” to withstand wear or change, and they are all subject to improvement by being stretched and altered by anyone willing to try them in original ways. All plays were tested, and indeed discovered, by children. Using thematic play as starting points allows teachers and students to transcend the traditional boundaries of art making and produce an entirely new range of art that questions what art is or could be.
