ABSTRACT
After the failure of his first three parliaments and the murder of the Duke of Buckingham, Charles spent most of his time and energies involved in the world of his court. Such a move should not be surprising, for he was merely repeating his behaviour after the previous major bereavements in his life, Prince Henry’s death and Princess Elizabeth’s departure for Germany, when he withdrew to the security of the humdrum routine of life within his own household.
