ABSTRACT

Towards the end of 1965 Russell prepared a major statement to be read on his behalf in Havana to the First Solidarity Conference of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America. “Peace Through Resistance to American Imperialism” 1 was the theme of the statement and it was published in January 1966 in America by the Minority of One under the title “Does the U.S. Make Peaceful Coexistence Possible?” Characterizing American imperialism as “a world system of oppression” Russell examined the economic and political policies of the U.S. which he felt represented “the true threat to peace and the true source of the danger of world nuclear war”:

In every part of the world the source of war and of suffering lies at the door of U.S. imperialism. Wherever there is hunger, wherever there is exploitative tyranny, wherever people are tortured and the masses left to rot under the weight of disease and starvation, the force which holds down the people stems from Washington.
