ABSTRACT

America and England, at the present time, are engaged in trying to like each other and, in a lesser degree, in pretending that they have always done so. It is very important for both countries, and for the whole world, that they should succeed in liking each other, but I do not think pretense as to the past is any help. It would be better to drag the lingering dislike and suspicion out into the open, to analyze them, and to attempt to deal with their causes. This would be a subject for a book, but in this article I shall confine myself to personal impressions.
