ABSTRACT
While the construction of a new building frequently involves destroying habitats or disturbing ecosystems, refurbishment of an existing building may be possible without having a negative impact on the ecological value of soft landscaped areas surrounding the building. This will depend on the amount of work required externally: building an extension, for example, may be as challenging as new build, while applying external insulation may disturb or destroy vegetation close to the walls.
