ABSTRACT
During my tenure at Yale I frequently noticed students in the drama school’s library leafing through issues of Theater heute. Without knowledge of German, the students would look at the impressive production photographs without any awareness of the plays or their complex social, political, and cultural circumstances. Studious imitations of these illustrations abounded in their productions, regardless of the play in question.
