ABSTRACT

This article sets out to explore some basic tenets of postdramatic dramaturgy as theorized and practiced mainly in the German-speaking countries. It is based on interviews with some 30 dramaturgs from the German-speaking region, conducted between 2003 and 2013 in the context of two ISF (Israeli Science Foundation) researches. The emphasis on German dramaturgy rests on two foundations: a) that practical dramaturgy has been created and developed in the German-speaking region for over 250 years and has always – especially since the 1980s – served as the realm of extreme experimentation; b) that consequently the contemporary German-speaking theatre offers the optimal case study for exploring the notion and practice of postdramatic dramaturgy. 1
