ABSTRACT
This chapter conducts empirical quantitative research into the extent to which the forces of creative destruction can affect the relation (interaction or correlation) between copyright expansion and industrial growth in the UK book publishing industry, at both the fi rm and industry levels, in the 30-year period from 1976 to 2006. Correspondingly, the relation (interaction or correlation) between copyright expansion and the growth of the UK book publishing industry, and the role of copyright expansion in growing the UK book publishing industry, are estimated over the same period. First, a concise account of the UK book publishing industry over the period is offered. Then, the methodological issues concerning the proposed empirical assessment, such as unit of analysis, sample, measurement, hypothesis construction, and econometric procedures, are addressed. With the methodological issues informing the research, the empirical assessment is conducted and corresponding results are presented.
