ABSTRACT

India's economy is growing steadily at 6–8 percent per year. This has many positive effects, but it has also great environmental and social costs. Changing to new technologies, many farmers have become indebted. There are many suicides of indebted farmers, official figures are about 250,000 in 10 years. The state of Maharashtra leads in the number of farmer suicides, but it is also a state with growing agricultural production and new commercial crops.
