ABSTRACT

In order to advance the field of psychotherapy, we need to continue the research initiated in the 1960s. This research was comprised of a series of investigations of the fundamentals and procedures in psychotherapy. As I look at the current publications in the field, even those as recent as January and February of 2012, I have become increasingly aware that research in the field has provided extensive information about the field. This research tells us that the standard approach of the 50-minute hour and the one-on-one relationship is fine. However, research is now suggesting that this approach is not always adequate.
