ABSTRACT
Principals have some responsibilities not readily recognized by teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. Many managerial duties related to students fall into that category. As examples, principals must ensure that proper student records are maintained and protected; they must ensure that students are appropriately supervised outside of classrooms; and they are expected to administer a broad activities program that meets student needs and interests. Though these tasks may seem rather inconsequential in relation to instructional leadership, they actually consume a considerable amount of a principal’s time and energy. And, as portrayed in the opening vignette, they may lead to legal problems.
