ABSTRACT

Schools not only help students learn, they have a responsibility to keep students safe. These two missions are inextricably intertwined. Affirming this point, Marzano (2003) posits that providing a safe and orderly school environment is essential to student learning. Though most educators readily agree with his position, they do not necessarily agree with how such an environment can or should be maintained. As illustrated in the opening vignette, many of the employees at Calumet River High School believe that simply excluding trouble makers from school is an effective approach.
