ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces how to use functional behavior assessment (FBA) data and techniques for intervention implementation. The FBA provides the context that problem-solving teams use when intervening with students demonstrating severe and/or chronic behavior problems. Although a team may choose to remove one due to information learned during the FBA process, these interventions are frequently effective for students with more challenging behaviors. Engaging in preplanned academic activity is less likely to bring about challenging behaviors when compared to “downtime” in the classroom. Behavioral interventions should provide students with adult attention when they are demonstrating appropriate behaviors. The FBA process should identify what in the environment is aversive to the student.
