ABSTRACT

Reasoning must play a part in moral development,, as in every other part of the child's growth. A learning process and the acquisition of essential knowledge are involved here, as everywhere. Moral skill has to be learnt like any other. The imbecile, or the feral child who has never developed human powers of reasoning, cannot acquire moral skill. But, on the other hand, the complete psychopath—the moral imbecile—may not be lacking in power to reason. Thus the place of intelligence is by no means clear-cut.
