ABSTRACT

Nancy and Bill Cunningham live in Atlanta’s Lakeview neighborhood, an old and established black middle-class enclave. Their large home is tucked inside Plainview Estates, an exclusive subdivision within the community. Nancy, an economist, and Bill, a dentist, display original art by celebrated African American artists in their home. Their collection is tastefully displayed, and spotlights draw attention to signifi cant pieces. The Cunninghams’ art patronage extends beyond collecting. They also participate in fundraisers for black arts institutions and lend their art to museums.
