ABSTRACT

Inside the large stucco home of professors Leah and Tyson Kelly there is a black-and-white drawing of Sojourner Truth. It hangs downstairs in a hallway not too far from a room where wooden African sculptures stand on white pedestals. One reason that the Kellys fi nd black art appealing is that it speaks to the historical experiences of the group. “I think at some point in the development of any culture you should learn to appreciate those aspects of the culture that lend themselves to understanding your history,” Leah says.
