ABSTRACT

This final chapter provides an opportunity to bring together many of the central themes of the book. In doing this, however, I’m keen to retain the focus of the previous chapter on the wider public arena in which education as a practice is situated. So, here the heartwork that was earlier explored – specifically in contexts of teaching and learning – will also be considered in the contexts of educational debate and policy-making at both local and international levels. If that heartwork is now seen to have a more pragmatic emphasis than in earlier pages, this should not be regarded as detracting from its merits. On the contrary, it should underline the point that an educational tradition confident of its own distinct merits must also be at home in policy-making quarters, and be well-versed in speaking its mind convincingly in such quarters.
