ABSTRACT

Looking through papers to take to Japan for our visit in 1990, I came across this account that I had not seen for many years.

It gives a somewhat lighthearted account of the last three weeks of what was a great battalion, 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, of which I was then Adjutant. At the Causeway itself we were just two weak companies with four armoured cars; on the Island, we were reinforced by the two Royal Marine Companies from the Prince of Wales and Repulse. The fighting on the Jurong Line and the night engagement with the Japanese Tanks were much more serious than I have portrayed, and I apologise for the words Nip and Jap, but all this was written 48 years ago.
