Previously, bound books were made to allow being chained in place as part of a book’s preservation, if you will. Bulky binding presumably existed to prevent theft, owing to the rarity of bound books.1 Because more copies could be more cheaply made, binding was no longer restricted to only rare books to accommodate added security: more people had them, and more people wanted them.
