ABSTRACT

With so many conflicting currents, so many misunderstandings, so many attempts to lay mines under the peace vehicle, it is astonishing that any agreement was ever reached and signed. It is certain that without Anwar Sadat’s single-mindedness and his almost brutal disregard of the vehement advice he received from his ministers and officials, no accord could have been achieved. Even those who criticised Sadat for initially not appreciating what the Israelis really wished could not but stand in wonder at his courage in single-handedly taking Egypt away from war to peace, even if the peace remained a cold one.
