ABSTRACT

Yesterday was basically a didactic day. A day designed to set the scene for the case studies that are to follow. As part of that learning process we were privileged to have the basic viewpoints of both the military and the media. We heard a masterful definition of limited conflict and an equally impressive insight into the technical versatility, reach and immediacy of the new high-technology global media. We were also made aware of the changing attitudes of the public towards the military and given an insight into what can be termed the sharp end of media/government cooperation in meeting the terrorist threat. 1 Having had the benefit of that background information, one would now like to attempt to set up a theoretical framework within which we can relate these lessons to our case studies over the next two days.
