GARDENER, JULIA ANN (1882-1960) Julia Ann Gardener rendered exceptional service to the World War II military through her detailed knowledge of geology. Her understanding of rocks was so complete that, for example, she could examine the sand used as ballast for Japanese incendiary balloons and tell from what beach in Japan it had originated.
