ABSTRACT

Zimbabwe, whose estimated population is 12, 236, 800, is a non-coastal Southern African country located north of the Tropic of Capricorn between Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers (World Fact Book, 2006). It is bordered by Zambia to the north, South Africa to the south, Mozambique to the east, and Botswana to the west. Zimbabwe is part of a great plateau, which constitutes the major feature of the geography of Southern Africa. Zimbabwe is a nation being overwhelmed by a plethora of challenges where its citizens are increasingly disenfranchised, profoundly frustrated and feeling a sense of hopelessness. The level of political instability, economic disintegration and poverty, which characterize everyday life in Zimbabwe, virtually relegate issues pertaining to the rights and needs of people with impairments to the lowest “rung” of the national priority ladder.
