ABSTRACT

In late 1993, North Korea undertook systematic assaults on the Korean Armistice by actively using force, both directly and indirectly, in the Joint Security Area (JSA), Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and the offshore Northwest Islands area in the Yellow Sea, with the primary political objective of concluding a peace agreement with the United States. This series of actions has been arguably the longest and most elaborate military-diplomatic campaign that North Korea has ever undertaken. Despite the sophisticated nature of this campaign, however, these efforts produced only mixed results.
