ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the literature on globalization, neoliberalism and its impacts on labour and labour movements. The chapter begins with a critical exploration of globalization, drawing particularly on the theorist Boaventura de Sousa’s definition of ‘globalizations’. This is followed by a brief history of the rise of neoliberal globalization, globalizations contemporary hegemonic form and a mapping out of the major transformations that have taken place. Finally, we explore the implications of neoliberal globalization for workers’ movements, pinpointing particular structural transformations that require new and innovative responses from organized labour.
